Yesterday was a bit of a nothing day so I didn't get around to writing anything.
Himself went up to the block and did some work on the storm water drain (he has permission and supplies from the developer but they obviously can't be bothered doing it themselves) and then did a bit of a tidy up of the building site. Strictly not allowed but it was bugging him. The trades (young fellas) do tend to leave a bit of a mess so Himself just went around picking up drink cans and offcuts of this and that and put it in a neat pile.
The estate is really coming along. There are now three houses completed and lived in, one nearly done (CW's and her builders are going around touching up all the things she found fault with so she shouldn't be far off finsihing), us and another couple well on the way to finishing and another three at slab/frame stage. At least one of those will more than likely be a rental. It is the same design as ours but a bog standard version and the owner is an Indian solicitor based in Melbourne. Andy (site supervisor) says he has overseen a few lately that have been built by Indians based in Melbourne and they are all investment properties which, I hope, will help the long term rental market down here and not just the short term, holiday rental market. As far as I am aware, the other houses will all be owner occupied (apart from one of the completed three which is currently housing CW and will then be a short term rental with the owners using it as a holiday house - it is right up the other end of the road from us so any party types won't bother us).
The topic on everyone's mind is, of course, the awful situation at a shopping centre in Bondi in Sydney where yesterday, a man went on a rampage with a knife and killed 8 people - mainly women. He was shot dead by a police inspector who happened to be in the area and responded to the call. It is believed he had severe mental health issues for many, many years. I wish the bloody media would stop sensationalising this. It is a sad situation where nobody wins. At least we learnt from Port Arthur after which our gun laws changed or it could have been so much worse.
Later ...
Himself has walked the dogs. I am so envious. I try to walk but the pain makes it impossible. The appointment with the surgeon can't come soon enough (8th May) and then I have to wait for an opening in his theatre list. I just hope that the issue is the hip and not something that can't be fixed. Yes, I am catastrophising but pain makes you do that.
We went to the supermarket. The hip/back/knee was so bad today I had to use a trolley to lean on. Steak for dinner and the makings for a slow cook which I will prepare shortly and then turn on in the morning and dinner will be ready in the evening. My favourite kind of cooking!
I am sorely missing my weaving and although all the looms I have could be considered small and portable they still require setting up and take up a bit of space and time to use. Yesterday I found an Australian company that sells pin looms and showed great constraint in only buying a 4" square and a 4" hexagon. This afternoon I went to Hobbii and bought some variegated cotton with which I plan to make some place mats for the new house. It comes from Denmark but they ship very quickly and I used them a lot during Covid. The yarn will probably arrive before the pin looms!!
It should go well with the colours we have chosen.
Later still ...
I hope your taken care of quickly. Yes pain does things to you and your mind. It’s hard to be positive when your in extreme pain.
ReplyDeleteI do like the colours of the cotton. I’m sure they’ll make very pretty place mats.
The stabbings in Sydney has really shocked us all. All I can say is thank the gods he didn’t have a gun it definitely would of been so much worse
It's hard to buy from a photo but I am sure it will look good. It has already been despatched so it will arrive before the looms!
DeleteGotta get the storm water right. So costly to fix later.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised at how clean work sites are now left. An overall person needs to ensure work sites are clean.
Clearly untreated mental health issues. Our systems failed society. I thought it was awful of the media to show the killer's parent's home.
My nephew is bush burning in Aireys Inlet, so don't blame him for your smoky washing.
People in posh suburbs used to rake autumn leaves into piles in the streets and set them alight. Childhood memories of burning rubbish in an incinerator, with exploding aerosol cans.
The metal topped rubbish bins and the lads who used to tip them into the trucks. I had so forgotten about them. The would have been so fit and so energetic 'at home'.
Not so much rubbish, but the huge amount of recycling material we produce, with Aldi large plastic meat containers primarily to blame for our always full bin. Aldi really needs to work on being more environmentally responsible with its packaging.
The media has a lot to answer for at times like this. There is a need to know and then there is sensationalism.
DeleteAll the supermarkets need to address their plastic use.
So you're now a pinloomer! Go you! It might help take your mind off the miserable pain. I think you'll like it.
ReplyDeleteOur garbage men aren't so cute, but some of the young landscapers, I need to watch. To see they're cutting the grass right, you know.
Well I will be once they arrive! I am hoping they are truly portable. I could have bought a schacht one but these are made of timber here in Australia.
DeleteI admire your dedication to making sure that grass is cut right. We all need to do our duty.
I thought of you, of course, when I read about the horrible stabbing event. Ugh. I wish that person could have gotten help before it came to that.
ReplyDeleteSounds like your house is coming right along and I love the idea of you making place mats for your table. How perfect!
I have often thought that being a garbage man (I'm sure there's a better name) would be an excellent fitness routine. You are right about how much less trash we used to produce. I don't think we can keep going at this rate.
I am so sorry about your hip. May can't come soon enough.
Decades ago the powers that be decided that inpatient mental health hospitals were an affront to an individual's rights and they were closed down leaving too many people with no support. They become homeless and sadly, when the voices get too loud, terrible things happen.
DeleteGarbos no longer run behind a truck. There is only one person per truck and it's all automated. A sad loss for many.
I thought about you as well when I heard the news. I wonder if the man was schizophrenic, mental illness since seventeen years of age; those poor people, the families of those killed and the ones injured and those traumatized, never to be the same.
ReplyDeleteI hope your hip and you, are helped with the surgery.
It is a tragic situation but we are fortunate it is a very rare occurrence.
DeleteI am counting down the days to the consult. Hopefully the op won't be much longer after that.
Why don't OUR bin men look like that?! LOL
ReplyDeleteSadly, ours no longer look like this!
DeleteCan relate to all your “back in the day” comments. Speaking of garbos in small shorts, 45 years ago I’d get off the tram and Barry Round (ruckman used to play for South Melbourne) used to work on a building site at the tram stop, in the days when they had a “real” job and footy on Saturday’s.....what a site. Marie, Cheltenham
ReplyDeleteCan you imagine a footy player having a real job these days? They are too precious for that.
DeleteI remember so much of what you wrote about, the garbos, the incinerators, the piles of leaves which we DIDN'T burn, they were piled on garden beds as mulch and left to become compost and were dug in when mum was readying the beds for the radishes and carrots and beans. I also remember mum putting bay leaves into stews and casseroles, so I did too, until one day I didn't have any so made the casserole without and found it to be much tastier so now I don't ever use them.
ReplyDeleteIsn't there legally supposed to be a dumpster on the site for the trade boys to put their rubbish in?
There is a massive dumpster that gets regularly emptied and the big rubbish gets put in there. Some blokes are better than others at tidying up their soft drink cans and general rubbish. It is not the worst site I have seen by a long shot but Himself is particular about site cleanliness and it gives him a sense of control and being involved. I bites me tongue!
